Suunto Ambit Review

This review is still in progress and I'm updating and adding new impressions regularly as I gain more experience with the Ambit and Movescount.

Outdoor Functions

As a mountaineering instrument, the Ambit has everything that you'd come to expect. Altimeter, barometer, temperature, and a 3D compass that functions properly even when it's not level. On top of this is the GPS with waypoint navigation.

Couple this data with the ability to fully configure how it is displayed on the Ambit screen and you have a device that you can really tailor to your tastes. Even with the configurability of other devices I've used, I have always wished that I could make the display show things in ways that were not possible. But Suunto has unlocked a level of control and configurability that I've not experienced and finally been able to tweak the display perfectly. Kudos to Suunto on this. I've got more on this with screen shots on the Movescount page.

The GPS has performed well and the tracks have been good. One thing I'd like to see added to Movescount in the future is the ability to add any waypoints that I save during my trip to the GPS track. Right now, they do get added to a section in Movescount, but don't actually get plotted on the visual GPS track. So, for example, if I'm on a trip and save a waypoint where there's a split in the hiking trail, it will not show that marker on the GPS track.

As mentioned, I've not had enough time to test everything, yet and this review is ongoing at this point. I've got quite a few tests planned, including playing around with some waypoint navigation, and will post results here soon.
